Sweet and Sour Cabbage is a beautiful dish!
I think it is one of my favorite German recipes. You can have this dish as a side to ham, pork chops, pork loin or the traditional German meats.
The rich color makes it look so appealing! Cabbage and apples are also extremely nutritious. Hey…..best of both worlds!
1 medium head cabbage (shredded)
2 Tbs. butter
1 medium onion (sliced)
2 tart apples (peeled and diced)
1 c. water
1/2 c. red wine vinegar
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper
2 whole cloves
Juice of 1/2 lemon
Heat butter in large saucepan. Saute onion and apples for 2 to 4 minutes. Add water, red wine vinegar, sugar, salt, black pepper, cloves and lemon juice. Stir and bring to a boil.
Add cabbage. Cover and simmer for 45 minutes or until tender. It is best when served hot. Serves 6.
